Bundanon is an artists' retreat in NSW established by the Australian
artist Arthur Boyd.
As Artist in Residence in both 2003 and 2004 I produced a series of
miniature "en plein air" woven tapestries and
pastel/charcoal drawings.
This work is an evocation of the landscapes of Sri Lanka and Australia,
combined in unlikely but comprehensible form.
Drawn from monotypes and collages, it reflects a childhood spent on a
lush tropical island and subsequent migration to this more unforgiving
environment.
This work collages the ancient, untouched rock of Australia - revered by its indigenous inhabitants as markers of place - against the carved stone monuments of ancient Sri Lanka, fashioned with respect for the natural forms from which they are forged.
A Manningham Art Gallery touring exhibition of small tapestries woven
'en plein air' at Bundanon and other locations within Australia as well
as in Sri Lanka and France.
The exhibition toured nationally between 2014 - 2016.
"Postcards from Home"- a series of small woven tapestries that explore the notion of 'home' to an artist born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and transplanted to Australia at the age of 11.
These works comprise a series of fourteen tapestries titled "Journey" that chart a trip I made by road from Port Augusta to Alice Springs, and the subsequent flight back home.
